Basic Blueprint Reading Course

Tuesday evenings from 4pm-6pm beginning January 12, 2021. This class will be held virtually through Zoom. All participants will need to have the Zoom app downloaded to their device.

This course will give attendees basic skills necessary to understand construction documents, and familiarize them with what to expect when reviewing the drawings. This includes familiarization with not only the Architectural scope, but site / civil & all mechanical trades as well. The importance of Project specifications and other related items that are part of a complete set of Contract documents will also be focused on. Participation is encouraged, and having interactive discussion will be an important piece of the course.

James Paolini, AIA

Mr. Paolini has over three decades of experience with various types of site and building design, project management, facility condition assessments, peer reviews for both public and private projects, as well as construction administration. His responsibilities consist of all phases of Architectural design from project viability / pre-design through closeout and commissioning.

Market segments include Federal GSA and VA (both VISN & NCA), government contract work including ID / IQ contract fulfilment, along with complete design services for residential, offices, retail, vehicle maintenance and industrial & aviation facilities.

James has held various positions in the American Institute of Architects Central New York chapter including President, Secretary and Director of Advocacy. He taught Architectural Visual Communication at SUNY Morrisville and been an invited guest juror at Syracuse University for various undergraduate and graduate level Thesis critiques.

An 8-session program specifically designed for small companies, including Minority and Women Owned Businesses, working to expand their annual income levels and compete in the upstate NY commercial construction industry. Employers should have an employee handbook. An employee handbook can minimize workplace disputes by providing uniformity with regard to employment expectations, appropriate workplace behavior, and employee benefits. A well written employee handbook shows an employer is complying with federal as well as state employment laws and can be a beneficial legal defense against an employee lawsuit. Handbooks must be reviewed annually and updated if needed to comply with changing federal and state legislation.

The seminar will discuss the importance of having a well written employee handbook that is tailored to reflect your organization’s vision and philosophy. The seminar will further discuss what should be included in a handbook and questions you should ask and answer, so that the handbook is individualized to your company. The seminar will also highlight the newest changes to federal and state employment laws that need to be incorporated in every handbook and will highlight key areas to focus on when reviewing and updating your handbook.

This class will be held at the Syracuse Builders Exchange located at 6563 Ridings Rd, Syracuse, NY. We have several safety guidelines in place - please be sure to review them. Due to limited class sizes, we are only taking 2 people per company at this time.

Please Be Advised – There is a Processing Fee for each Student’s Completion Card. This Non-Refundable Fee Must Be Received Or The Completion Card Will Not Be Released To The Student. Payment of $10.00 per student Must Be Received By The First Day Of Class. If Paying By Check – Please Make Payable To: Safety Source Consultants. Please Be Aware OSHA Regulations Prohibit The Instructor From Distributing Completion Cards To Anyone Other Than The Student Present At The Class. Cards Will Not Be Distributed To Employers. SBE Safety Guidelines:

Temperature checks will be performed upon student’s arrival.
Smaller class sizes to accommodate social distancing.
Attendees of any class must be pre-registered. Anyone not on the pre-registration list will not be admitted. Do not send a replacement unless you notify SBE in advance.
Entrance to the building as well as exiting, will be through the rear doors ONLY. Do not enter or exit through the main front entrance or through our plan room entrance.
Masks are required at all times.
Hand sanitizer will be available in the classroom.
Desks will have a 6’ foot separation to maintain social distancing.

Students gain the ability to recognize safety and health hazards and appropriate engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls. Completion also meets the requirements for OSHA 10-Hour training under NYS's existing prevailing rate law for public work of $250,000 or more effective June 18, 2008. OSHA states that training must be delivered in a language employees understand. SBE classes are currently designed for English speaking participants. If an employee is not fluent in English and does not clearly understand English and will not benefit from a class due to the language barrier, the instructor reserves the right to refer that individual to alternative resources for training. Employers may contact the local OSHA office at 315-451-0808 for information on training provided in languages other than English.This course is free to Syracuse Builders Exchange Member firms.

Under the New Respirable Crystalline Silica in Construction standard that took effect on September 23, 2017 employers are responsible for training their employees on silica health hazards; tasks that could result in exposure to silica; engineering controls work practices; and respiratory protection the employer will use to protect employees from silica exposure; contents of the silica standard; the identity of the competent person; the purpose and a description of the medical surveillance program; and more. Participants in SBE’s Train-The-Trainer class will receive PowerPoints, tests, and other support materials for later use with their own employees.

Participants must bring a flash drive and, if possible, a laptop, and must be prepared to do a brief talk during the class on a silica-related subject to be assigned by the Instructor.
