This course will give attendees basic skills necessary to understand construction documents, and familiarize them with what to expect when reviewing the drawings. This includes familiarization with not only the Architectural scope, but site / civil & all mechanical trades as well. The importance of Project specifications and other related items that are part of a complete set of Contract documents will also be focused on. Participation is encouraged, and having interactive discussion will be an important piece of the course.

James Paolini, AIA

Mr. Paolini has over three decades of experience with various types of site and building design, project management, facility condition assessments, peer reviews for both public and private projects, as well as construction administration. His responsibilities consist of all phases of Architectural design from project viability / pre-design through closeout and commissioning.

Market segments include Federal GSA and VA (both VISN & NCA), government contract work including ID / IQ contract fulfilment, along with complete design services for residential, offices, retail, vehicle maintenance and industrial & aviation facilities.

James has held various positions in the American Institute of Architects Central New York chapter including President, Secretary and Director of Advocacy. He taught Architectural Visual Communication at SUNY Morrisville and been an invited guest juror at Syracuse University for various undergraduate and graduate level Thesis critiques.

EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) requires that firms performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and pre-schools built before 1978 have their firm certified by EPA (or an EPA authorized state), use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers and follow lead-safe work practices.

Anyone who is paid to perform work that disturbs paint in housing and child-occupied facilities built prior to 1978 must be certified. This includes all firms including sole proprietorships. Types of firms covered include Residential property Owners and Managers, General Contractors, Special Trade Contractors such as painters, plumbers, carpenters, and electricians. Activities covered by the rule include any activity that disturbs paint in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities including remodeling and repair/maintenance, electrical work, plumbing, painting preparation, and carpentry window replacement.

There are some new guidelines to follow and we ask that you please review them carefully.

Masks are required at all times.
Temperature checks will be performed upon student’s arrival. Anyone exhibiting a temperature of more than 100 will not be admitted.
Smaller class sizes to accommodate social distancing.

In an effort to communicate directly with more members more frequently, and to answer questions member firms may have, the Syracuse Builders Exchange will be hosting a series of periodic "Happy Hours" during the year with SBE Executive Director Earl R. Hall.

This informal "Happy Hour" will cover various subject matters of importance coming from the membership, with Earl addressing pre-submitted questions from those who registered for the event.

This class will be held at the Syracuse Builders Exchange located at 6563 Ridings Rd, Syracuse, NY. We have several safety guidelines in place - please be sure to review them. Due to limited class sizes, we are only taking 2 people per company at this time.

Please Be Advised – There is a Processing Fee for each Student’s Completion Card. This Non-Refundable Fee Must Be Received Or The Completion Card Will Not Be Released To The Student. Payment of $10.00 per student Must Be Received By The First Day Of Class. If Paying By Check – Please Make Payable To: Safety Source Consultants. Please Be Aware OSHA Regulations Prohibit The Instructor From Distributing Completion Cards To Anyone Other Than The Student Present At The Class. Cards Will Not Be Distributed To Employers. Students gain the ability to recognize safety and health hazards and appropriate engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls. Completion also meets the requirements for OSHA 10-Hour training under NYS's existing prevailing rate law for public work of $250,000 or more effective June 18, 2008. OSHA states that training must be delivered in a language employees understand. SBE classes are currently designed for English speaking participants. If an employee is not fluent in English and does not clearly understand English and will not benefit from a class due to the language barrier, the instructor reserves the right to refer that individual to alternative resources for training. Employers may contact the local OSHA office at 315-451-0808 for information on training provided in languages other than English.This course is free to Syracuse Builders Exchange Member firms.
